Local primary school help spread positivity in lockdown!

by Linda Philo

Postcards made by Fritchley Primary School children

Local primary school help spread positivity in lockdown!

Children at Fritchley Primary School have had a wonderful idea to help spread positivity and joy to those who may be feeling lonely and disconnected during these isolating times.

Four recipients of the Fritchley School postcards

With the support of the school, the children have created postcards which are being distributed around the community by a fleet of volunteer drivers, who have also been delivering meals to members of the Glebe Luncheon Club. Below are some of the beautiful postcards, as well as some of the lucky recipients of them.

The postcards will continue being delivered over the next week, so keep your eyes peeled as you may get something through your post-box sooner than you think!

Dawn's Meals

by Linda Philo

Dawn Harper in her kitchen cooking meals

Many of you will have heard about Dawn Harper’s mammoth efforts to provide good, wholesome food for isolated people in our community throughout the pandemic.  This still continues.

ASDA logo

Just before Christmas she made an application for funding to Asda’s ‘Feeding Communities’, the plan was to create and deliver Christmas dinners.

Due to receiving so many applications, Asda were overwhelmed with requests, there was a delay in the confirmation.  However, after Christmas we heard that we had been successful but then had to give this a bit of a rethink... February isn’t the right time to deliver Christmas meals!

Dawn came up trumps again and contacted families in the community who would benefit from a sizeable hamper, all the contents purchased from Asda.  Asda themselves were incredibly supportive throughout the whole process and enabled Dawn to order online and have the food for the hampers delivered.

These were gratefully received, and Dawn received several kind comments such as... ‘This has made such a difference to our family during this difficult time’ and ‘We would just like to say  thank you to Dawn for organising this!’

A big Thank you to both Dawn and ASDA!

Dawn Harper Menu

Dawn is now pleasing other people in the community, by providing a take-away breakfast and lunch menu from her cafe at the back of the Red Lion Pub, Fritchley, DE56 2FT

All food is freshly cooked to order using quality ingredients served Tuesday to Friday between 9.00 am and 1.30 pm. Delivery can also be arranged.

Pre order if possible please by telephoning or text Dawn on 07791 559394. Payment by cash or card.

This newsletter has been produced by the Crich Patients' Participation Group and Crich Area Mutual Aid and has been delivered to all households in the catchment area of the Crich Medical Practice. It has information about vaccinations, prescriptions deliveries, ideas for keeping fit, cheerful and healthy during the last weeks of winter and an update from the Crich Area Dementia Friends.

You can download a pdf of the leaflet below.

Christmas dinners and hampers distributed to older people.

by Geoff Brown

Christmas dinner, cooked by Dawn Harper for older people on their own for Christmas.

Today saw the delivery of plated festive meals to older members of our community who will be on their own for Christmas.

Dawn Harper, who has been cooking hot meals for vulnerable and isolating people throughout the first lockdown and again since November, was anxious that her regular clients should not miss out at Christmas. With some local funding coming available from the family hampers appeal, Dawn and Cathy Bowness have masterminded the production and delivery of complimentary hampers to a number of people and pre-cooked Christmas dinners to others who they knew would be on their own for Christmas day. Over thirty people have benefitted. Delivered by a small team of regular volunteers, the hampers and meals were well received by all.

Thanks are due to Dawn and Cathy for the tremendous amount of work and organisation that has gone in to this community project. The service also helps to maintain regular contact with some of the people who may normally attend the Crich Luncheon Club at the Glebe, but who have been unable to meet for most of this year.
